An Uneasy Jaw

The night screams
At ruby walls
This hinge squeaks
Her jewelry box pops
A sinewy kiss for
Perfumed diamonds
Floral notes of her
An enamel pin
Forging gold out of light
The amalgam bitter
Tonguing pearls
This catch grinds at the swivel
The bone clasp scrapes on
My grandmother’s brooch.

The Messenger

Someone told me how to summon her.
So, I tried it like a schoolyard dare,
Thinking it would never work.
But it did.
She appeared at the side of my bed,
Head to toe an unearthly black.
I couldn’t feel her arms beneath me,
Lifting.
So, I stayed very quiet, still, and limp
As she carried me across the house,
Floating.
She never made a sound either,
Not even as she struggled to stuff my body
Into a cupboard.
Terrified, I never once looked at her face.
